supporting families & local communities in Calderdale

Sanham Aurangzeb, Co-ordinator for BME Families I work as the Black Minority And Ethnic Co-ordinator, across  Calderdale. I started working for Home-start in May 2010 and have never looked back since. I love working for this fantastic family orientated, organisation, where the ‘family’ is truly at the heart of what we do every day! I love working with our fantastic team of volunteers who are dedicated to empowering and supporting families. My previous experience consists of working for  Sure Start as a Family Support Worker for 8 years and 2 years as a part time Youth Worker.  I am also a parent of 3 boys, aged 14,10,and 2 and this has given me a wealth of parenting experience and the stresses it can bring!  I was also a young mum and a full time student so multi-tasking was the key! Gail Lumb, Office Manager I have been working in the office at Home-Start since October 2003. It has been a pleasure meeting such a wealth of amazing volunteers throughout the years. I rarely get to meet the families supported, so when volunteers pop into the office, it is always great to hear stories of how they are helping out. Email:

Helen HIrd, Lower Valley Co-ordinator  I am a newer member of the Home-Start Calderdale team having just started in December 2017, but I`m not new to working in Calderdale or West Yorkshire, so I know the area and know the issues often facing families who need a bit of additional support and friendship. I am really pleased to be working directly with families and volunteers and to be able to offer some of my life skills and working experience to enable families to feel less stressed, more supported and better able to deal with the day to day demands of parenting. Whilst my own children are grown up I am now living the new experience of being a grandparent in a world of social media, new technology and making sure I am up to date with the latest new trend. Finally, I am really excited about being part of the team and not only learning about what the families want and need but to be able to give something back, to see families grow and develop and enable them to have a better future.

Charlie Johnston, Senior Co-ordinator I started working as the Upper Valley Co-ordinator for Home-Start in August 2006, having spent the previous ten years working for local charities... Which means I fully understand the headache that is annual funding, marketing with a zero budget and the ever present joy of not-enough-staff-for-the-work-needing-done! I love working for Home-Start as it gives me a chance to work with amazing volunteers and lovely families. I have two super teenagers but still remember how hard life can be when they're wee! Linda Preston, Upper Valley Co-ordinator I joined Home-Start Calderdale in December 2017 coming from a childcare back ground. I gained my childcare qualifications and worked for many years in a primary school as a nursery nurse. I then ran a private day nursery for a few years but realised I wanted a new challenge so I gained a teaching qualification and became a childcare tutor, teaching in a college for a number of years. After becoming a parents to my two amazing boys (who are now 6 and 8) and while  taking time off work to bring them up I became a volunteer for Home Start Calderdale. I enjoyed this immensely and was amazed to see how Home Start could make a difference to a family’s life with the experience and support from the volunteers. I knew this is where I wanted to work so I am very thrilled to be the Upper Valley Co-ordinator supporting families and volunteers in the area.
