Linda has a wealth of experience, having managed the local children's development unit for many years, and can help families access care and provision that may not be known to them, alongside weekly support from a volunteer. Our volunteers that have expressed an interest, will gain extra training to provide tailored support in order to improve the lives of the child and the family.

Night out at the Tower House!

On Friday 9th May 2014 at 7.45pm Home-Start is planning a fun social night where staff, volunteers, Trustees and supporters can come together for a good night out. Michael C Langton, a fabulous singer from the Cruise Circuit, will be there to entertain us and the dance floor will be available for all of us to strut our stuff! The venue is the Tower House Hotel at Pye Nest in Halifax and the manager there, Robert Oddy will compere the evening for us and make sure it all goes with a swing. When Michael stops singing the disco will kick in, courtesy of the Tower House sound system and we can carry on well into the night!

Tickets are £10 per head and will include all of that entertainment and a hot supper to boot. The food at the Tower House is always good and we think you will find that the £10 price tag is a good value night out.

There will be a raffle and an auction on the night so bring some extra cash - this night is about getting together for some fun but we will be trying to raise some funds for Home-Start at the same time.

Please come along and bring all of your friends and family. To book and purchase tickets you will need to call the office (01422 242124) or, if you're already linked to us, arrange the purchase through your co-ordinator. This event will get posted on Facebook too so you can direct you friends and family to that - click here to go to our Facebook page. Last year this was a great night and we know it will be again so please join us!

Goodbye to paper!

After almost 15 years of running a regular newsletter to volunteers we have now finally decided to communicate with you all using other medium. The newsletter has been rolling out every other month for some time now and takes a large chunk of time to produce it as well as a large chunk of money to print and post it.

Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, the Internet and Emails we can now communicate with you all in a more immediate way-and its free!!

Nicky Lowney, our Clerical Assistant, has created a Home-Start Calderdale Facebook page which you have all, hopefully, been invited to "Like". If not, then now is your chance! Click here to visit the page. This will be updated very regularly to ensure that any news about Home-Start is circulated quickly and shared widely in the blink of an eye!

Charlie Johnston has also worked hard to update the Home-Start Calderdale website and this too is kept up to date as well as providing lots of information and links to other interesting stuff.

Thanks to these wonderful high tech communication tools the traditional newsletter has become rather redundant as well as time consuming and expensive and so we say goodbye to the printed word. We do know that not all of our volunteer will have access to Facebook or, indeed, the internet and emails, but the large majority do. If you are feeling left out by this bold move to the electronic world please give us a call and we will endeavour to find a means of reaching you somehow!

Investors in People

We are thrilled to annouce that on the 27th January Home-Start Calderdale was awarded the Investors in People award.

We easily met the core standard and have been encouraged to aim higher by going for the Bronze Standard which we will be discussing later this year.

It has taken us all a lot of hard work and effort to get to this point and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who contributes to the scheme - volunteers, staff and Trustees. The Investors in People Assessor, Alan, was very impressed and complementary about eveyone he met and everything he heard about.

New Staff

We are delighted to announce that the local Clinical Commissioning Group have awarded us funding to employ three new members of staff who will be based in our Halifax office. We have now appointed three new people to the team and they will all be up and running (and raring to go!) from the New Year. Welcome to the team to Maxine, Linda and Nicola.

This year we combining our Annual General Meeting with an Open Evening and hope to make a real event of this. It would be great to have lots of our team of home-visiting volunteers with us as we celebrate the good work you have all been doing all year. Please put the date in your diary and come along. Thursday 4th July 2013 from 6.00pm until 8.00pm at the Tower House Hotel, Master Lane, Pye Nest, Halifax.

Good Time at the Tower

On Saturday 18th May at the Tower House in Sowerby Bridge we had a brilliant night in celebrating the amazing work of the staff and volunteers at Home Start Calderdale.

There was live entertainment from local singer Lewis Matthews, a very successful raffle and a brilliant auction with amazing prizes from Syhiba, Halifax Town Football Club, The Tower House and many more. Supper was included in the ticket price with locally produced 'Bangers and Mash' - which were absolutely fantastic, no one went home hungry!

Thanks to the generousity of those who came, bought raffle tickets, donated prizes and bidded on the many wonderful auction lots, we raised over £500 for Home-Start! Special thanks must also go to the staff at the Tower House for their support before and during the night.

New to the Team

'Families Matter' and Home-Start Calderdale Team Up!

We are thrilled to announce two new members of staff! Our new Key Workers, Sarah Hodgson and Sam Kelly, will be providing intensive support to families in the Central and North Halifax areas through the Council's Families Matter Project.

Funded by Calderdale Council, as part of the National Early Intervention Strategy, this pilot project sets out to support in depth those families who have complex needs. The project aims to ensure that families at the onset of difficulties or increased vulnerability are intensively supported in the early stages to avoid the problems escalating. It is hoped that, with this support, fewer families may need the support of more specialist services.

Families that meet the criteria for Key Worker Intervention will receive visits several times a week from either Sam or Sarah. These visits will be both practical solution-focussed in nature (for example, helping families to address issues around worklessness or anti-social behaviour) but also providing emotional support to parents and children dealing with complex social issues.

For more information, please call 01422 242124 and speak to our Senior Co-ordinator, Linda Crowther.

Seeing Double

Home-Start volunteers are currently supporting a high number of families with twins and these are often some of most our successful relationships. We would like to extend our support to twin parents and have been approached by a local twins group who meet on the first Friday of every month at Play Palace Halifax.

Many of the parents we support attend this session and tell us meeting with other twin parents can be a life line for them. However as their babies get older, the parents find that when they attend groups they spend most of the time chasing round after the kids leaving little time for them to chat with the other parents!

We know how much time you already give up for Home-Start but if you could spare another hour or so on the first Friday of every month then why not pop down to Play Palace. If you are a parent of twins yourself of if you support a family with twins or even if you can just spare a little extra time every month then get in touch with Sam in the Home-Start office.

We hope to have a couple of volunteers each month at the sessions just to talk to the parents, help them out with the children, introduce themselves to parents who are not being supported by us, maybe even suggest becoming a volunteer when their kids start school etc

If you're interested in being involved with this project then ring the office number 01422 242124

Local Giving

Home-Start Calderdale has now linked up to a fabulous organisation called Local who will manage any online donations for us and support anyone who wants to plan any fundraising, giving ideas to promote events etc. We would like to ask all of you to encourage everyone you know to go onto the Home-Start Calderdale website at and follow the JustGiving link and make a donation to your favourite family support charity - no matter how small as every little helps
